As a server in a family restaurant, solo diners are rare. I see far more groups of people than those eating alone.
Maybe it’s the stigma that eating alone is sad or embarrassing. Whatever the reason, only a tiny fraction of people actually dare to dine with themselves.
I’m trying to get into the habit of going out to eat, taking trips, and enjoying my life solo because my work schedules don’t generally line up with family and friends, and if I don’t have to compromise, then all the better.
So I dove into Reddit to find out: what are solo diners actually doing during their meals? I analyzed 500+ comments, and what I found surprised me. People who already dine solo do it unapologetically. They don’t conform to what society says they should do alone; they opt out of the norm.
