I have this insane desire to travel and explore the state, the country, and the entire world. But traveling doesn’t come without expenses, especially if you’re getting on an airplane for hours, staying in a hotel, and experiencing everything you want to anywhere you go.
Lately, work has been slow, so money is tighter, especially with price increases everywhere. I’ve had to calm myself down from planning trips every other weekend. Which in turn makes me sad and feel like I’m going nowhere with my life as a 37 year old who also has multiple sclerosis.
There’s plenty to explore in my hometown that I’ve never seen so why not start here? Tons of things are actually FREE like museums, library events, or even city events! Why not bring the energy to my hometown that I would to Paris?!
And that’s exactly what I started doing.
Why This Matters (Especially Now)
At 37, with a chronic illness and a tight budget, I could list a hundred reasons why my life isn’t Instagram-worthy. But exploring my hometown solo taught me:
- Adventure is a mindset, not a destination
- My pace is the right pace
- Free experiences often beat expensive ones
- I’m damn good company
Every solo date is proof that I’m not stuck. I’m not waiting. I’m living — MS, budget constraints, single status and all.
Your Turn to Start Exploring
If you’re reading this thinking “must be nice,” stop. I’m writing this from my couch in pajamas because I’m too tired to go out today. Tomorrow might be different. That’s okay.
Start where you are:
- Google “[your city] free events this week”
- Pick ONE thing
- Show up for 20 minutes
- Count it as a massive win
Because whether you’re 27 or 57, healthy or chronically ill, broke or just careful with money — you deserve to explore. Even if exploration means the coffee shop two blocks over.
Especially then.
